Project Controls and the Smell of Dysfunction
It’s popular in some Agile circles to diss controls such as Earned Value Management (EVM).
Example: “Artificial measures such as EVM typically prove to be overhead at best, whose only value is to cater to the dysfunctional bureaucrats infesting many organizations.”
Nonsense! EVM and Agile are more than compatible—they are complementary. Consider how Earned Schedule adds value to Agile schedule control.
Burndowns are commonly used to communicate project performance. Adapt them to EVM. Compare the schedule earned to the planned burndown.
If the ES line is above the plan line, you’re behind schedule. If it’s below, you’re ahead of schedule. That gives you a quick reading on schedule performance.
And, that helps control schedule performance while leveraging your investment in Earned Value.
Does that smell? Yes, the sweet smell of success.
